Phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Sideritis taurica Stephan ex Wild.

Fatty acids (FA), hydrocarbons, alpha-amyrin, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol were identified in the n-hexane extract of the aerial parts of Sideritis taurica Stephan ex Wild. Xanthotoxin, as well as 2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-5,6,8-trimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone were isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the plant. In addition to apigenin 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and apigenin, previously reported from the plant, hypolaetin 7-O-beta-D-allopyranosyl-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract. From the methanol extract, isoscutellarein 7-O-beta-D-allopyranosyl-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside was also isolated. Toxicity study of petroleum ether extract (f(1)), ethanolic extract (f(2)), dichloromethane fraction of f(2) (f(3)) and n-butanolic fraction of f(2) (f(4)) of the plant proved that it is relatively nontoxic. The tested extracts and fractions exhibited significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic and antihyperglycaemic activities, but no anticonvulsant and antipyretic effects, as compared with control groups and reference drugs.

Antimicrobial triterpenes from Ilex integra and the mechanism of antifungal action.

Antimicrobial triterpenes were isolated from the fruits of Ilex integra. Their structures were elucidated by spectral data and identified as rotundic acid (1), ulsolic acid (2) and peduncloside (3). Triterpene 1 showed significantly broad antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi. The antifungal activity of 1 was reversed by fatty acids. Cellular constituents leaked from Candida albicans cells incubated with triterpene 1. These results suggest that the antimicrobial activity of triterpenes in I. integra is due to a change of membrane permeability arising from membrane lipid alteration.

Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity of folklore: Mallotus peltatus leaf extract.

Since ages Mallotus peltatus (Geist) Muell. Arg. var acuminatus (Euphorbiaceae) leaf and stem bark is used in folk medicine to cure intestinal ailments and skin infections. In several intestinal ailments, localized inflammation is of common occurrence and hence we have evaluated the antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory activity of M. peltatus leaf extract. The crude methanol extract of M. peltatus leaves was found to be active against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Streptococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis and the dermatophytic fungi Microsporum gypseum. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges from 128 to 2000 microg ml(-1) for bacteria and 128 mg ml(-1) for fungi, while the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 2-4-fold higher than MIC. The methanol-water fraction of the extract showed similar activity against Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bacillus and Proteus isolates. The anti-inflammatory activity of the extract against carrageenan (acute model) and dextran-induced (subacute model) rat paw oedema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma (chronic model) in rats were studied using indomethacin (10 mg kg(-1)), a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug, as standard. The methanol extract at 200 and 400 mg kg(-1), and the n-butanol fractions A and B at 25 mg kg(-1), exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in Albino rats, compared with indomethacin. Phytochemical study revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, terpenoids, steroids and reducing sugars in the crude extract while the n-butanol fractions showed the presence of ursolic acid, beta-sitosterol and some fatty acids as major compounds. Further study with fractions showed that the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity is due to either fraction A (ursolic acid) alone or the combination of fractions A and B (beta-sitosterol and fatty acids) of the extract.

Elevated Levels of High-Melting-Point Phosphatidylglycerols Do Not Induce Chilling Sensitivity in an Arabidopsis Mutant.

Molecular species of phosphatidylglycerol that contain only 16:0, 18:0, and 16:1-trans fatty acids undergo the transition from liquid crystalline phase to gel phase at temperatures well above 20[deg]C. Several lines of evidence have been used to implicate elevated proportions of these high-melting-point molecular species as a major cause of plant chilling sensitivity. In the fatty acid biosynthesis 1 (fab1) mutant of Arabidopsis, leaf phosphatidylglycerol contained 43% high-melting-point molecular species[mdash]a higher percentage than is found in many chilling-sensitive plants. Nevertheless, the mutant was completely unaffected (when compared with wild-type controls) by a range of low-temperature treatments that quickly led to the death of cucumber and other chilling-sensitive plants. Our results clearly demonstrate that high-melting-point phosphatidylglycerols do not mediate classic chilling damage. However, growth of fab1 plants was compromised by long-term (>2 weeks) exposure to 2[deg]C. This finding and other observations are consistent with a proposition that plants native to tropical and subtropical regions have evolved many traits that are incompatible with long-term growth or development in cooler climates but that may confer selective advantages at high temperatures.

Hair growth is a sophisticated biological process, which is still not thoroughly understood.
