Mural folliculitis and alopecia caused by infection with goat-associated malignant catarrhal fever virus in two sika deer.
Crawford TB, Li H, Rosenburg SR, Norhausen RW, Garner MM.
Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University, Pullman 99164, USA.
Two sika deer from a zoo in Florida were examined because of chronic hair loss and skin lesions. No common causes of alopecia were identified in either deer. One deer was treated with prednisone, but the condition worsened when the dosage was decreased. Both deer were euthanatized after several months because of continued disease. The predominant histologic lesion in skin specimens was granulomatous mural folliculitis. Serologic testing and sequencing of fragments produced with a consensus polymerase chain reaction assay indicated that both deer were infected with caprine herpesvirus-2, a newly recognized member of the malignant catarrhal fever group of viruses. Disease in these deer was substantially different from that typically seen following infection with ovine herpesvirus-2, the sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever virus. Findings in these deer establish the pathogenicity of caprine herpesvirus-2 in sika deer and illustrate the ability of this group of complex herpesviruses to cause a wide variety of clinical abnormalities in diverse species.

Biophysics of the cochlea - biomechanics and ion channelopathies.
Ashmore J.
Department of Physiology, University College London, UK.
Understanding how the cochlea works as a system has become increasingly important. We need to know this before integrating new information from genetic, physiological and clinical sources. This chapter will show how the cochlea should be seen as a device for carrying out a frequency analysis built from cells that have been adapted for specialist purposes. Sensory hair cells convert mechanical displacements into the neural code. The transducer channel remains to be identified. The biomechanics of the cochlear duct depends on an energy-dependent feedback from the sensory outer hair cells. The molecular basis for outer hair cell feedback depends on a protein that has recently been identified. The auditory signal encoded by the cochlea is further modified by membrane properties of the hair cells and cochlear supporting cells. The interplay between techniques of genetics, molecular biology and cell physiology has started to reveal which ion channels and transporters in the cochlea are mutated in certain forms of deafness. The interpretation of these mutations requires the cell physiology of the cochlear partition to be better characterised in the future.

Syphilitic alopecia.
Abdul Gaffoor PM.
PIP: A case of alopecia as the only symptom of secondary syphilis in a 32-year old Indian man is described. The man presented with patchy hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows, chest and legs, and generalized nontender lymphadenopathy. Laboratory tests were positive for RPR (rapid plasma reagin test) at 1:64, FTA Ab (fluorescent treponema antibody absorption test). He had a history of heterosexual contact 9 months previously. He was treated with procaine penicillin 600,000 units im daily for 10 days, and hair growth resumed within 6 weeks. Hair loss described as "moth eaten alopecia" is common in secondary syphilis. Other patterns of hair loss related to treponema infection include diffuse, extensive alopecia as a penicillin reaction, and peripheral scalp[ alopecia in infants with congenital syphilis.

Adolescent girls' anxieties -- role of stressful life events.
Singh H, Sofat R, Gill PJ, Soni RK, Kaur L.
PIP: The study aim was to examine stressful events among 300 adolescent girls 11-17 years old enrolled in school in India. 50.33% had illiterate mothers. 22.33% had mothers who had a primary education and 25.34% who had a secondary education. 82.33% (247) were from nuclear families, and 17.67% (53) were from joint families. The largest proportions reported financial problems (38.67%) followed by household moves (30.33%) and a close relative's death (27.33%). Other concerns reported were parental frequent change or loss of job (12.33%), involvement in a court case (4.67%), death of one or both parents (4.33%), and frequent parental arguments (1.33%) and serious family accidents (1.33%). No stressful events were reported by 31.69% (95 girls); 68.34% reported stressful family events. A significant correlation was found between anxiety and life in a nuclear family (p 0.001). Anxiety was also higher, but not statistically significantly so, among families with an illiterate mother and lower socioeconomic status. More anxieties were reported among girls with working mothers (68%) than non-working mothers (32%). A significant correlation was found between the score of life events and the number of girls reporting anxieties. Individual anxieties were reported for inadequate height (15.66%), fear of boys' teasing (12.33%), losing hair (11.60%), menstrual tensions (10.33%), weak eyesight (9.66%), pimples (9.33%), weakness (8.88%), lack of study time (5.67%), excessive weight (3.67%), dark complexion (2.66%), and bad teeth (2.00%); 55.34% reported these anxieties.

Due to the complexity , the biological process of hair growth is still a work in progress. Nonetheless, several therapeutic methods including prescription medications, transplant surgery, nutritional suppelements, and even snake oils have been in use to help those who attempt to restore their hair. None of these approaches are perfect due to the heterogeneity in the causes that underlie hair loss. Unfortunately, most of these chemical drugs and hair transplantation operations are accompanied by undesirable side effects.
Hair Million of Dream Pharm provides an alternative approach to hair loss problems. Numerous anecdotal cases have demonstrated that this herbal formula based on the authentic Chinese herbs from Chinese Pharmacopoeia actually improves the age-related hair thinning and hair loss among a significant fraction of people who take it as suggested. We still do not understand the mechanisms of action as to how Hair Million works to stop hair loss and promote hair growth, despite all the positive anecdotal demonstration. Neither scientific research nor placebo controlled clinical analysis has been conducted due to the high cost of such trials. Lack of scientific/clinical research is quite common in herbal arena. Just because science hasn't scrutinized doesn't mean we should stop taking daily food and herbal supplements altogether: our life must go on until we have better understandings of food and herb that we have been taking generation after generation. There are two merits in this hair restoration herbal formula: Firstly, Hair Million is relatively inexpensive compared with other methods, and secondly, it is made of edible herbs that are known to be safe when consumed in regular quantities.
