The effect of dextran to restore the activity of pulmonary surfactant inhibited by albumin.

Pulmonary surfactant is crucial to maintain the proper functioning of the respiration system. Certain types of blood proteins (e.g. albumin) were found to inhibit the activity of pulmonary surfactant. Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) was used to study the effect of dextran to restore the activity of an albumin-inhibited pulmonary surfactant. It was found that dextran could effectively restore surface tension properties of the inhibited surfactant in vitro. Furthermore, dextran improved the performance of pulmonary surfactants when albumin was absent. It was found that when a surfactant film was under high compression (e.g. above 70% surface area reduction), the presence of dextran increased film stability, so that the film could sustain high surface pressures without being collapsing.

Mini rats (Jcl: WistarTGN(ARGHGEN) 1Nts) (MRs) are Wistar rat (WR)-derived transgenic rats in which the expression of growth hormone (GH) gene is suppressed under the presence of antisense RNA transgene. In order to evaluate the effects of GH-deficiency on the acute injury by external stimuli, the dorsal skin responses to a single topical application with 20% hydrogen peroxide (HPO), one of the environmental oxidative stressors, were histologically compared between male MRs and WRs of 8 weeks old, whose hair cycle was under the telogen phase. As a result, formation of granulation tissues, reepithelialization and regrowth of hair follicles were delayed in MRs compared with WRs. While hair follicles of MRs of this age are under a long-lasting telogen phase after their 2nd cycle, a new hair cycle started not only in the HPO-applied area but also in the solvent-applied area with a little time lag. These findings suggest that GH-deficiency may influence the skin responses to the external chemical stimuli.

Kallmann syndrome--a case report.

Kallmann syndrome is a very rare hereditary disease. It is characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in association with anosmia ot hyposmia, both of which occur as a result of the failure of neuronal migration of the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH)--secreting neurons and the neurons of the vemeronasal nerve. It can be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked mode of inheritance. We report a case of Kallmann syndrome that presented with delay puberty, color blindness, gynecomastia, and absence of smell. Plasma levels of LH, FSH and testosterone were very low. The patient's adrenal and thyroid hormone levels were normal. Chromosome analysis showed 46, XY karyotype without deletion in KAL gene (Xp22.3) from FISH. After 9 months of treatment by HCG and HMG, the amount of pubic hair and the volume of bilateral testes, as well as the level of testosterone had increased. Most importantly, motile sperm count be found in semen.

Plasmaless atomic absorption was used to study biosubstrates from the workers engaged in the production of caustic soda for the levels of mercury. In 63% of the examinees, the urinary concentrations of mercury exceeded the critical value and substantially increased after administration of a detoxifying agent. The content of mercury in the hair was also higher than the physiologically allowable normal value. The cause of chronic mercury intoxication was the intensive contamination of the industrial environment with mercury vapours.
