Relationship of sexuality with psychological and hormonal features in the menopausal period.

Women may experience some mental and sexual problems between the ages of 40 years and 60 years due to serious changes in the hormonal system. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between the changes in sex hormones, sexual behaviours, depression and anxiety levels of women who were in either the premenopausal, perimenopausal or postmenopausal period. The subjects of this cross-sectional study consisted of 324 women who attended the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Out-Patient Ward of Celal Bayar University Hospital. Of this group, 37.0% (n = 124) were postmenopausal, 27.2% (n = 84) perimenopausal and 35.8% (n = 116) premenopausal. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State and Trait Anxiety Inventories (STAI-I and II) and a questionnaire on sexual behaviour which was prepared for this study by the authors, were applied to all of the attendees and serum sex hormone levels were analyzed. Beck Depression Anxiety, STAI-I and STAI-II scores and sexual behaviours did not show any statistically significant difference among these three groups. The frequency of sexual intercourse was lower in women with high BDI scores. The rate of painful intercourse was higher in women with high STAI-I scores. The frequency of sexual intercourse, sexual desire and orgasm decreased and painful intercourse increased in women with high STAI-II scores. The frequency of sexual intercourse decreased significantly as the age or follicle stimulating hormone level of women increased. These findings have revealed that the menopausal state did not affect the sexual behaviour, and psychological state of women between the ages of 40 and 60 years, but the increase in anxiety and depression scores affected the sexual life in a negative manner.

Study of gastrointestinal polypeptides controlling gastric acid secretion in patients with primary antibody deficiency.

BACKGROUND: gastric abnormalities are a common feature in patients with primary antibody deficiency. The most important problem is the high incidence of stomach cancer found in these patients. Chronic atrophic gastritis with pernicious anemia is also a common finding that predisposes to gastric adenocarcinoma. The aim of the present study was to identify factors predictive of high risk for developing gastric cancer in patients with primary antibody deficiency. PATIENTS AND METHODS: we studied gastric hormones (gastrin, somatostatin and gastrin-releasing peptide, GRP) in 47 patients (23 children and 24 adults) with primary antibody deficiency. In accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, patients were diagnosed as having X-linked agammaglobulinemia (Bruton disease) in 13 cases, common variable immunodeficiency in 28, and hypogammaglobulinemia with hyperIgM in 6. Gastric biopsy was performed in 22 patients (16 children and 6 adults). Hormone determinations were carried out by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: baseline serum gastrin levels were normal or increased compared with controls, but the response to stimulation with a hyperproteic diet was delayed in 18 patients and lower than in controls in 7. In 4 adult patients, all with pernicious anemia, gastric biopsy revealed chronic atrophic gastritis involving the stomach corpus and antrum (type B gastritis). The absence of a normal response of gastrin secretion to stimulation with a hyperproteic diet may be explained by this finding. Serum somatostatin and GRP levels were higher than in controls. No correlations were found between these findings and patient age, type of immunodeficiency or duration of clinical manifestations.

Ratio of leptin to adiponectin as an obesity index of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

Obesity is responsible for inducing various metabolic diseases. Laboratory-bred cynomolgus monkeys exhibit spontaneous onset of obesity. However, to date, no blood chemistry index to identify the state of obesity in cynomolgus monkeys has been determined. In the present study, to determine such an index, we measured the serum levels of two adipocyte-derived hormones, leptin and adiponectin, and evaluated the relationship between these hormones and other serum energy metabolic factors (i.e. insulin, total protein, glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride) as well as the percentage of body fat (%Fat) in mature cynomolgus monkeys. Both in females and males, leptin was positively correlated with insulin and %Fat, and adiponectin was negatively correlated with insulin and %Fat. In female cynomolgus monkeys, leptin, adiponectin, and glucose were selected as the most important determinants for %Fat in multiple regression analysis, and in male cynomolgus monkeys, leptin was selected. The ratio of leptin to adiponectin (L/A ratio) was significantly elevated in the animals with %Fat over 40 (P < 0.01). The results indicate that L/A ratio is a potential index for comprehensively identifying obesity in cynomolgus monkeys.

[A case of hyperlipoproteinemia caused by corticosteroid therapy in a child with subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis]

A 10-year-old child was diagnosed as subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis. After a steroid hormone (predonine) administration for 17 days, he showed total cholesterol(TC) 420 mg/dl, triglyceride(TG) 839 mg/dl, and LDL-cholesterol 241 mg/dl. The hyperlipidemia seemed to be a side effect of the steroid at the onset. However, the lipoprotein fraction by the agarose gel and polyacrylamide gel (PAG) electrophoresis showed type III of the WHO classification, that is, presence of broad band as well as appearance of mid band, small dense-LDL and the disrupted type of LDL band. In addition, there were hyperlipidemia (high levels of the TC, TG, LDL-cholesterol) in 4 persons out of 6 family members, and LDL pattern of the PAG electrophoresis, 4 persons showed the nodular type. They have higher possibility of combined-type familial hyperlipiemia from the above results, and it seemed to be the case in which the hyperlipidemia was exacerbated by the steroid administration.

Effect of deer velvet on sexual function in men and their partners: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

The use of alternative medicines and herbal remedies is an increasing trend in Western societies. For years, people have taken products made of deer velvet for their alleged beneficial effects on sexual function. There has been no scientific investigation of the effects of deer velvet powder on the sexual functioning of human males. This study investigated sexual function in men during a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of deer velvet. Thirty-two volunteer male participants, aged 45-65 years, and their partners, were randomly assigned to either the deer velvet or placebo study group. The males took capsules containing ground deer velvet or placebo everyday for 12 weeks. Two sexual function questionnaires (the International Index of Erectile Function and the Brief Index of Sexual Function for Women) used at pre- and posttreatment assessed changes in sexual functioning in males and their partners. Blood tests at baseline, and end of study, determined levels of sex-related hormones in male participants. There were no significant differences in the sexual behavior of the men taking deer velvet compared with the men taking placebo capsules. There were no significant hormone changes from baseline to the end of the study in either group of men. We conclude that in normal males there was no advantage in taking deer velvet to enhance sexual function. All alternative health products or nutritional supplements should be subjected to randomized placebo-controlled trials to determine efficacy.
