[Etiopathogenetic basis for using magnetolaser therapy in the complex treatment of male infertility]

Up to 12-15% couples are infertile. The "responsibility" for infertility rests with the husband in 40-45% cases. The effects of routine drug therapy (n = 95) on a generative function are compared to those of magnetolaser therapy (n = 93) in 188 males with excretory-inflammatory infertility suffering from chronic prostatitis. Low-intensity laser infra-red radiation was used in a permanent magnetic field produced by Azor-2K unit. The magnetolaser therapy more significantly than the routine therapy raised concentration and number of mobile forms of the spermia, reduced their degenerative forms, elevated the level of serum sexual and gonadotropic hormones. In 1 year pregnancy occurred in 41.7 and 55.4% of 83 and 87 families (groups 1 and 2), respectively. The delivery took place in 35.8 and 49.7%, respectively.

The use of accepted preventive medicine practice among elderly patients in community clinics in the Jerusalem area.

BACKGROUND: With the aging of the population and the increase in the number of elderly patients under the care of primary care physicians in the community, it is essential that the physician be aware of the preventive medicine recommendations for this group of patients. Accepted evidence-based guidelines have been developed for the older patient and adherence to these guidelines may play a significant role in decreasing morbidity and mortality in the elderly. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether elderly patients in community clinics are aware of the preventive medicine practices that are relevant and available to them, and to assess which factors influence their decision to use such interventions. Of particular interest was to evaluate the role of the doctor-patient relationship on the degree of patient compliance with preventive procedures. METHODS: Patients attending community clinics of the Clalit Health Services in Jerusalem were interviewed. Background information was obtained and the patients were questioned regarding the use of the following preventive medicine recommendations: screening for occult blood in the stool, testing of vision and hearing, influenza and pneumococcal immunization, thyroid-stimulating hormone testing, digital rectal examination for prostate cancer, and calcium supplementation. The patients were questioned regarding the use of aspirin or oral anticoagulation where relevant. Factors influencing their level of compliance were examined. RESULTS: The study group comprised 205 patients with an average age of 74.5 years. Overall the rates of compliance were high, with 78% undergoing visual assessment, 87% fecal occult blood testing, and 81% influenza immunization. Pneumococcal immunization had been administered to 49% of those interviewed and 56% had their hearing tested. Digital rectal examination had been performed in 45% of patients. Calcium supplementation was used in 60% of patients. Almost all the patients (91-100%) noted that the physician had initiated the procedure and that non-compliance was due to patient preferences. Of the 172 patients who were assumed to benefit from aspirin use, 153 (89%) used the medication, and 87% of 23 patients with atrial fibrillation were on chronic anticoagulation. CONCLUSIONS: A high level of compliance with preventive medicine recommendations was found among this group of elderly patients. The doctor-patient relationship had a positive effect on the patients' compliance.

Doping is defined as the use of substances and/or forbidden methods for the artificial performance-enforcement of an athlete during competition or in the preparation period. A survey is given on the misuse of doping agents in recent years, with special emphasis on stimulants, beta blockers, diuretics, exogenous and endogenous steroids and peptide hormones. The introduction of new doping substances including perfluorocarbons, ecdysteroids, synthetic hemoglobin and peptide hormones (e.g. growth-hormone) precursors is described. Hyphenated separation techniques achieved great progress in doping analysis and control, of which some of the recent methods such as LC-MS, GC-MS CE-MS are briefly reviewed here.

Growth hormone plays an essential role in the stimulation of somatic growth and development. To produce large amount of grass carp growth hormone (gcGH) of biological activity for further use, this study aimed at high-yield expression of gcGH in the yeast Pichia pastoris. The gcGH cDNA was inserted into a yeast vector, pGAPZ-alpha-B. Under the control of the promoter GAP (glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase), a 22-kilodalton protein, similar to the molecular weight of native growth hormone, was detected in the supernatant of transformed yeast. It led to a level as high as of 50 mg/L. This protein could be specifically immunoprecipitated with rabbit polyclonal antibodies raised against gcGH. A receptor ELISA Sandwich method was also performed to verify the biological activity of the in vitro expressed gcGH.

[Cloning and sequencing of ACC oxidase gene from sugarcane]

The plant hormone ethylene is not only responsible for the initiation of fruit ripening, senescence and dormancy but also for regulating many other plant developmental processes, such as seed germination, root initiation, growth, floral differentiation, sex differentiation and responding to environment stresses. One of the rate-limiting steps for ethylene biosynthesizing in plant is catalyzed by 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) oxidase. Understanding of ethylene expressive pattern in plant is an entrance to understand the roles of ethylene on plant. In this paper, two degenerate oligonucleotide primers were designed, coding for two conservative amino acid regions in ACC oxidase protein family, the sequences of the two primers were TAGAGCTCGATGC[TA]TG [CT]GA[GA]AA[AC]TGGGG and CGTCTAGAGCTTC[GA]AATCTTGGCTCCTT respectively. A PCR amplification was performed on sugarcane (Saccharum L. Hybrid cv. ROC16) DNA template, and produced a fragment of 940 bp. By using the program of BLAST on NCBI GenBank database, the sequence presented a very high match with the ACC oxidase genes from other plants, 63 searched out sequences were all ACC oxidase genes. After alignment on PCgene program, the identities of the cloned fragment with ACC oxidase genes from rice and bamboo were both reaching about 88%. So we can concluded that the cloned sequence was a member of ACC oxidase genes fragment from sugarcane. The sequence has been submitted to the GenBank database, the accession number is AF442821. According to the ACC oxidase protein family, a 'intron' of 103 bp was excluded and the sequence coded 279 amino acids, which spanned 88% of the putative whole sequence in length. Alignment and phylogenetic analysis of the amino acid sequence deduced from this fragment and the ACC oxidase sequences of other plants retrieved from GenBank were carried out by using PCgene program. The putative amino acid sequence shared a homology of 86% with the ACC oxidases of bamboo and rice, 74.6% with banana, 70% with tomato and potato and 68% with melon and carnation, which showed that the homology of sugarcane ACC oxidase with monocot was higher than with dicot. The results of phylogenetic analysis showed that ACC oxidase from sugarcane and ACC oxidases from rice clustered together firstly, and then came those from banana, ACC oxidases of dicot from potato, tomato, petunia, melon, Arabidopsis thaliana and carnation came subsequently. It indicated that sugarcane ACC oxidase had a closer phylogenetic affinities to the monocot ACC oxidase sequences than to the dicot ACC oxidases sequences. The clustering results of ACC oxidase molecules accorded with morphological classification system.

Beautiful, dense hair is a dream for many people. Hair growth is a sophisticated biological process, which has not yet been understood. A multitude of therapeutic measures, including drugs, surgery, and suppelements have been developed. However, due to the diversity of the problems underlying hair loss, there is no single solution that can address all hair loss cases.
