A study to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of feracrylum and its comparison with povidone-iodine.

Feracrylum, a water-soluble polymer of polyacrylic acid is known for its hemostatic property. Present work is an effort to evaluate its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and compare it with the MIC of povidone-iodine. Ten different species of pathogenic microorganisms were selected, strains of which were obtained from Haffkine Institute. The organisms were maintained under appropriate culture media. The MIC of Freracrylum was determined by using tube culture method where its activity was compared against a standard antimicrobial agent providone-iodine. The study parameters showed that Feracrylum exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide variety of microorganisms and its efficacy is comparable to that of povidone-iodine.

Solitary delayed contralateral testicular metastasis from renal cell carcinoma.

We report a 60 year old male presenting with contralateral testicular metastasis 7 years following radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. Testicular metastases from renal cell carcinoma reported in literature are predominantly ipsilateral and invariably on the left side. Usually these are present simultaneously with the renal primary or precede the diagnosis of renal tumors. Delayed contralateral testicular metastatic has not been reported to the best of our knowledge. The case highlights the unique behaviour of renal cell carcinoma with an unusual site of recurrence. The clinical presentation, pathogenesis and management of this rare presentation along with review of recent literature are discussed.

This paper presents theoretical aspects concerning the physiopathological mechanisms involved in producing the glaucoma following trauma, especially the lens related glaucoma, correct identification of the ethiopathogeny of the intraocular pressure elevation in this situation is essential for the appropriate management. These aspects are illustrated by two cases of recent glaucoma following trauma lens related (lens subluxation) treated by medication and surgery. The surgical procedure consisted of intracapsular extraction of the lens, anterior vitrectomy, iridectomy and implantation of sulcus sutured posterior chamber lens. We present the technique, the difficulties met intra- and postoperative, evolution and prognosis.

Reports of an inverse relationship between nicotine intake, due to cigarette smoking, and the incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) prompted us to investigate the effects of nicotine on amyloid beta-protein precursor (AbetaPP) processing in rat. Over-production and/or altered metabolism of AbetaPP, resulting in increased amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta), appear pivotal in the pathogenesis of AD. Abeta is generated proteolytically from betaPP by a group of secretases. AbetaPP cleavage by gamma-secretase results in the secretion of a truncated soluble betaPP (sAPPgamma) that contains intact Abeta. Nicotine, 1 and 8 mg/kg/day, doses commensurate with cigarette smoking and a higher but well tolerated dose, respectively, was administered over 14 days and Western blot analysis was performed on sAPP fragments. Both doses significantly reduced sAPPgamma. These actions were blocked by nicotinic receptor antagonism. Whereas nicotinic antagonists alone had no effect on either total sAPP or sAPPgammalevels in CSF, muscarinic antagonism significantly elevated them; suggesting that muscarinic rather than nicotinic receptor silence alters processing of AbetaPP to favor a potentially amyloidogenic route. Combined nicotine and muscarinic antagonism attenuated the action of the latter to elevate sAPPgamma, indicating that nicotine modifies AbetaPP processing away from potentially amyloidogenic products. These results suggest that within the brain, levels of total sAPP, sAPPgamma and, accordingly, Abeta are subject to cholinergic manipulation, offering therapeutic potential at the level of AbetaPP processing to decrease Abetadeposition.

[Biometric variation of the ocular globe in myopia]

GOAL: The study of correlation between myopia's pathogen and the biometrics variations of the different eye ball segments. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 64 patients were included in this study: 54 patients with myopia higher than--5 diopter and 10 patients with cataracta. All patients underwent a complete ocular examination including: visual acuity determination, ocular fundus examination, automatic refractometry, keratometry. Biometry was performed with an ultra-scan system. RESULTS: From 64 patients, 53 were with axial myopia, 1 with myopia induced by low corneal curvature radius and 10 patients with myopia induced by a high refractive index of the lens caused by cataract. In cases with axial myopia the axial length was high (26.1 mm) with a high vitreous length (20.78 mm). In cases with index myopia, only the lens thickness and the anterior chamber depth undergo biometrics variations. Curvature myopia is the result of the decrease of the corneal curvature radius. CONCLUSIONS: Axial myopia is that by far the most frequently form of myopia. In this case the increases in axial length is proportionally with the degree of myopia. Index myopia is produced by the increase of the refractive index of the lens in cataract. A low corneal curvature radius less frequently than the others produces curvature myopia.
